Dushanbe International Airport

The new terminal at Dushanbe International Airport is designed to deliver better service to users. For this project, we designed and built a two-level, 12,000-square-metre building that can accommodate 1.5 million passengers a year. The project was launched in 2012 and the terminal was inaugurated in September 2014.

BACKGROUND

From 1980 to 2014, the population of Dushanbe shot up from 500,000 to nearly 800,000. In addition, Tajiks are increasingly finding international work opportunities (nearly a million Tajiks work abroad). Accordingly, airports must adapt to increasing numbers of passengers if they are to contribute to continuous development. That is why a new terminal was needed at Dushanbe International Airport. This infrastructure meets current and future needs in this country undergoing rapid development.

TECHNICAL OVERVIEW

Ninety-three percent of Tajikistan is mountainous, with more than half of the peaks exceeding 3,000 metres in altitude.
Since equipment and materials were not always available in Tajikistan, we had to plan our worksite supply strategy well in advance, with the exception of concrete and steel. For example, individual protection equipment had to be imported in an effort to ensure optimal worksite safety.
In the pre-project study phase, we decided to implement Building Information Modelling (BIM) on this project so as to assess construction and share information more easily and effectively.

The terminal was inaugurated on the day of the 90th anniversary of the founding of Tajik Air, that is, September 3, 2014, less than two years after the launch of the project.

IMPACT

This secondment of air personnel in Dushanbe represents for the time being the main economic project between France and Tajikistan.
This new terminal can handle as many as 1.5 million passengers a year and meet the airport’s strong development needs (with 8% more air traffic per year on average over the past ten years). The terminal provides optimal-quality service to passengers and airlines in compliance with international standards.
